Press Release: Marineland Touting Beluga Births While Hiding Deaths
Marineland (Niagara Falls, On) have been doing press recently highlighting four new beluga births on site - including a puff piece on WGRZ in Niagara Falls, NY. What these stories have failed to mention is that it is alleged that Marineland has also had three recent beluga deaths - Oceanna, Doc and Scoot.
Marineland has always refused to confirm the death of any of their captive animals, as this news makes for much more critical and negative press than animal births. In light of the recent death of Kavna at the Vancouver Aquarium, and the secrecy that shrouds the captive animal industry, our discussion should be on how to end the industry - not on how best to provide space to allow this industry to continue.
Spokesperson Dylan Powell had this to say about the celebrated births and unreported deaths, “The inventories don’t lie. For people who want to see the record of these parks Zoocheck has been doing an amazing job of chronicling them. The unreported deaths at Marineland specifically are a perfect illustration of how the animals on site are nothing more than commodities - they are celebrated and promoted while alive and then immediately forgotten as soon as they die. No memorial. No mourning. No words of loss. The psychological toll on trainers must be overwhelming.”
